Google has announced a significant new feature coming to Chrome that will let any audio playing in your browser be automatically captioned in real-time. The update, arriving in Chrome 134 on February 26, will allow websites to generate captions for everything from video calls to embedded audio clips and live streams.
Currently in development and set to enter beta testing on February 5, the feature adds MediaStreamTrack support to Web Speech API. This means websites will be able to create captions for any audio source playing through the browser, not just microphone input as currently limited.
The feature is launching first on Windows, Mac, and Linux, with Chrome OS support planned for a future update. Google has implemented security measures requiring websites to get explicit user permission before accessing any audio streams for captioning.
By building captioning capabilities directly into Chrome, Google is eliminating the need for third-party services or additional software installations that users currently rely on for automatic captioning. The beta period starting February 5 will give developers and early adopters a chance to test the feature before its official launch.
