Chrome 134 to Add OS-Level Background Blur Detection for Video Calls

Chrome will soon help video calling applications detect when users have background blur enabled at the operating system level. The update, arriving in Chrome 134 on February 26, will allow web applications to monitor the status of background blur effects applied by Windows, macOS, or ChromeOS.

Currently in development and set to enter beta testing on February 5, the feature adds VideoFrameMetadata support to track background blur status. This means websites will be able to detect when users have blur enabled through their operating system, helping prevent performance issues that can occur when blur effects are enabled in both the OS and web application simultaneously.

During the initial rollout, the feature will be available as a developer trial in Chrome 134 behind the "enable-experimental-web-platform-features" flag. Developers can test the functionality by enabling this flag in chrome://flags.
